Hi - I accidentally came across this post.

Have you tried Cyclogz.com? This is a web based (and much better alternative) to Training Center and even MotionBased.com, and is completely free. In the spirit of open source, this site is written using open source technologies.

Subbu
Disclaimer: I created cyclogz.com recently, as I did not like the alternatives around.

Thanks for the program, it is exactly what I was looking for.

With the exception of a small bug that can be fixed in 5 seconds the code works great on Gentoo via USB with both Edge 305 and Forerunner 305. I successfully uploaded my workouts on both TrainingPeaks and MotionBased.

Keep up the good work!

(I posted the bug with the solution, a missing return line, on launchpad)

I got this to work by commenting out import serial. I have the garmin edge 305 connected with it's usb device and the garmin_gps module blackisted in ubuntu.

Thanks for the program, it works well!

I haven't played much with waypoints yet, so I don't know if they work or not. What I have been concentrating on is mostly trackpoings, laps, and runs. You might want to try GarminSync (https://launchpad.net/garmin-sync) and see if that works better. It will download all your activities via USB and export them into TCX file, including information like heart rate, cadence, etc.

Sportstracker looks interesting, I'll take a look at it.

First, allow me to congratulate you on your great initiative. I hope that you will follow through and provide a working tool for downloading information from the Garmin units.
I tried the USB version on my ForeRunner305 and it seems to be working to some extent.
The command that you have provided identifies my unit and prints the product ID along with the SW version.
The info command produces an error.
The protocols command is working and prints a bunch of protocols.
The waypoints command prints out three lines that have some sort of coordinates (?). I believe that I am not up to speed with the command's use and intent. The unit stores WAY more waypoints.
The routes command responds with "Downloaded routes". I don't know where it downloads them to and can't verify that they were indeed downloaded.
The tracks command prints out a lot of trackpoints and it seems that it includes all the location information stored in the unit (no heart rate etc.).

What would really be great is if you eventually join forces with the person who is developing the sportstracker (http://www.saring.de/sportstracker/index.html) and provide an easy to use tool for downloading information from the garmin and tracking activity.

In the meantime, is it possible to read the tcx file from the Garmin into a file through the USB interface?

I _can_ get an XP machine within VMWare Player to work with the Forerunner (I've been using MotionBased and TrainingCentre). Initially it didn't see the USB device. However I installed the USB drivers from the Garmin site into the VM and rebooted the VM machine. I also made use the device was connected before I launch the VM. On the top of my VMPlayer it says "Garmin Device" and I can connect or disconnect by hitting the toolbar button.

I'd rather it was all done natively on Linux though. I've got a Forerunner 301. I'll try to remember to take a look at your app when I get home to my Ubuntu 7.04.

I don't have a Forerunner 205, so I can't test it. But the Edge and Forerunner are very similar, so I think it should work. And if it wouldn't work, it shouldn't be too hard to make it work, with some debugging help from someone who owns a 205.

I'm considering getting the Forerunner 205, do you think GarminSync is compatible with it?

It should be, but it might be that your browser automatically unzipped the file while downloading. Try untarring it with 'tar xvf garmin-sync-0.1.tar.gz' and see if it works.
